Day 3 Lake Louise

It was one of those early, early mornings (no just kidding) - we woke and were out of the room before housekeeping arrived to tidy the room.  Things to do today - organise the Activities Pass (4 activities for $139 + tax) through the Chateau.  We had high hopes that they would allow us to purchase the pass, whilst we are not technically staying at the Chateau, we were hanging around there a lot, saying hello to as many staff as possible hoping that they would just assume that we were guests there.

Evan (Concierge) lovely fellow really, was very helpful with advising us of the activities that were possible and the availability - excellent book them in we stated.  Evan, most obliging asks not a problem what name is your reservation under???????

Elona quietly asks, "It is a problem if we are not actually guests here????" Evan again being the concierge of highest aplomb said, "No problem, we just need a credit card to secure the bookings and if you want to cancel we require 12 hours notice."  FANTASTIC, book them in - Snow Shoeing tomorrow, Ice Walking in the Johnston Canyon the next day and the day after that our first Cross Country Ski Lesson followed by a tour on Cross Country Skis in the afternoon.  DONE!!!

What next - Elona suggests ice skating on Lake Louise.

We went to the hire place after a wee bit of getting lost - this is a very large hotel!!! But WOW I have never seen hire skates in such a good state - just amazing. So very excitedly we head out to the lake where there is a beautiful Ice Castle facade out the front and on we go. A little tentatively at first - especially due to the fact that this is a lake and NOT as smooth as your average rink - every now and then your skate will just stop because it has hit a lump of ice or a 'hockey skate crater' as I call them. Just really big grooves that can play havoc with you balance. It was an amazing feeling to be on the lake and be surrounded by mountains and the gorgeous Fairmont Chateau and of course snow snow snow!!!

After nearly two hours on the ice, we returned our skates and we decided that food was the next thing on the agenda.  Now whilst the food at Deer Lodge is very good, the only thing that changes on the menu each day is the soup.  The menu is also the same for lunch and dinner... you do get tired of having the same choices all the time.  I should also mention that the soup being the cheapest item on the menu at $10 (then add tax and a tip) everything else was $16 and up.  We needed to investigate a cheaper way to source health but not highly expensive food.  The Chateau has 4 different restaurants, a Saloon, and a Deli.  Now the restaurants all compare in price to the Deer Lodge, The Saloon is the hockey (sports bar) and we really didn't investigate if they had a food menu. The Deli on the other hand - what a find; fabulous soups, salads, lasagne, sandwiches all for $10 and under  and the breakfast menu even has oatmeal....  Yeah!

Very impressed with the food - well done and we will be back to the Deli on a regular basis.  Now time to return to the lodge and catch up on the blog...
